3/31/2021 SD Baseball Recap: Harrisburg Wins Wild Game West River, Vermillion Dominates

Huron 8, Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central 5

Huron won a tough matchup against W/WS/WC. The Tigers quickly got out to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning off a Mason Davis sacrifice fly, a wild pitch, and dropped third strike. W/WS/SC answered in the third inning with a two-run single, but Huron had back-to-back singles by Dawson Rogers and Johnny Hernandez that scored runners in the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers scored once more in the third inning on a single by Peyton Grace to extend the 6-2 lead.

The Tigers then almost ran away with the game, scoring on a wild pitch and a walk in the fourth inning, but W/WS/SC answered with a two-out RBI single in the fifth. W/WS/SC then almost started a comeback in the seventh, but Huron held on for the 8-5 victory.

Hernandez finished with the win for the Tigers while Max Kranzier had the save.


Vermillion 13, Yankton 1

The Tanagers started the season with a dominant victory over the Yankton Bucks at Riverside Park. The featured game was reduced from a doubleheader to a single nine-inning game. This story will be updated with stats when they are released.


Harrisburg 14, Sturgis 12

In a wild game West River, Harrisburg begins their barnstorming trip with a narrow victory over Sturgis. Chase Lucas tripled and scored three to start the game and nine runs in the sixth inning seemed to secure the Harrisburg victory. But holding a 14-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers gave up 3 runs, before the Scoopers scored 7 in the final inning.

Harrisburg 6, Sturgis 0

The TIgers finished the doubleheader with a 6-0 shutout victory over the Scoopers. Harrisburg scored early on an error in the first inning, and extended the lead in the third inning on a bases loaded walk.

Harrisburg’s offense then cruised to victory, while pitcher Will Simmons had a perfect game until one out in the fifth. Simmons finished with 14 strikeouts and 1 hit in 6 innings pitched.
