Legion Baseball Recap (5/31): Yankton, Aberdeen, Brookings, Take Two

Yankton 17, Huron 1 (5 IN.)

Yankton started their season with a big opening day win over Huron. Rugby Ryken went 4-4 with 3 runs and 4 RBIs, while Cody Oswald matched with 4 RBIs on 3 hits.

Also for Post 12, Dylan Prout finished with 3 hits, Drew Ryken drove in 3 runs, and Joe Gokie gave up 1 earned run with 5 strikeouts.

Yankton 3, Huron 2

Joe Gokie stole two runs for Post 12 to secure the win. Twice, Gokie stole second and third before an errant throw allowed him to touch home. Gokie also drove in the third run on a walk, while Rugby Ryken finished with a pair of walks as well.

For Huron, Mason Davis scored on 3 walks, and Max Kranzler went 1-2 with 2 walks in the leadoff spot, while scoring a run of his own.

Aberdeen Smittys 6, Post 15 West 2

A 4-run 5th inning secured the victory for the visitors on Tuesday night. Drew Salfrank lead the way from the leadoff spot, going 3-4 with 3 RBIs and a walk. Casey Vining, Jaiden Smith, Josh Steinwandt and Nick Clemens all had 2 hits in the win.

Aberdeen Smittys 4, Post 15 West 2

The Smittys completed the sweep, as Vining gave up just 1 earned run in 6 innings of work. The winning pitcher also had 2 hits and a walk in the night game, while Philip Zens drove in 2 runs on 2 hits. Teammate Josh Steinwandt also drove in 2 runs on a hit and walk.

Brookings 6, Pierre 4

The Post 74 Bandits took an early 6-3 lead in the 3rd inning, and held on for the victory over Post 8.

Zach Struck had a double among 2 hits and finished with 4 RBIs, while Ashton Witte scored twice off of a hit and two walks. For Pierre, Jack Merkwan went 2-3 with a walk and a run, and teammate Bennett Dean drew a trio of walks.

Brookings 7, Pierre 5

Brookings earned the sweep with 7 players earning a hit in game 2. Ashton Witte was the only player for the Bandits to finished with 2 hits, but Henry Hammrich drove in 2 runs on a hit and walks. Teammate Austin Clark also went 1-2 and scored twice.

Mitchell 2, Renner 0

Dylan Soulek threw a complete game shutout, giving up just 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6. Peyton Mandel had 2 hits for the victors, and Soulek drove in both runs for Post 18.

For Post 307, Quinn Dunham finished with 2 hits, including a double.

Mobridge 16, Stanley County 1 (4 IN.)

Jack Faehnrich gave up just 1 hit and 2 walks in the victory, punching out 4. Post 4 also had 15 hits, including 4 from Holden Eisemann. Teammate Simon Fried also finished with 3 hits, while Collin Tisdall went 3-3 with 5 RBIs and 2 triples.

Stanley County 7, Mobridge 3

Stanley County bounced back to split the double header, and held Post 4 to just 4 hits. Fried had 2 hits and a run in the loss, and Brenden Begeman finished with 1 run on 2 walks.

Flandreau 6, Salem 5 (8 IN.)

Post 70 rallied in the 6th, 7th, and 8th to push across 4 runs and earn the extra innings win. Tristan Peters drove in 3 runs on 2 hits for the victors, and Tanner Christenson touched home 3 times on a trio of walks. Teammate Logan Voelker also scored twice on a pair of hits in the win.

MVPCS 7, Canova 5

A late 5-run rally in the 6th inning helped elevate the Padres to the win. MVPCS only had 4 hits in the game, but capitalized on 7 walks and errors.

Kane Knudson scored twice on a hit and a walk in the win, and Austin Hauge went 1-2 with a walk and 2 RBIs. For the Gang, Griffin Clubb finished with 2 hits and a pair of RBIs, while Kolt Koepsell drove in a run on a pair of hits.
