Yesterday in SD Sports: Dec.11 Recap Blog

This is our new series in which we provide you with a recap of South Dakota Sports from the day prior while you drink your morning coffee. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the stories. 🙂

Wow!

What an exciting evening on Friday and where to even begin? Matthew Mors’ 48-point performance? Or how about the statement victory for Class A #1 Dakota Valley over #3 Tea Area? I don’t know, but let’s hop right into it with our first topic of the day.

MATTHEW MORS AND THE YANKTON BUCKS

Matthew put on a statement game west river, scoring 48 points in the Bucks 76-60 opening night victory over Spearfish. The Spartans kept it close for a little while, but I think Mors showed just how talented he really is compared to the rest of the field. However, I was surprised by how close Spearfish kept this game and I’m interested in Yankton’s matchup against Stevens today. Oh and did we mention the dunks?!

Class A Ranked Battle: #1 Dakota Valley vs #3 Tea Area

My goodness was this a fun game to watch! I said that Tea Area was bringing back some talent and did they?! Jeff Worth scored 22 points in the loss while Cael Lundin had a double-double, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Tea struggled to shoot well from behind the arc, going 7-28 from the 3-point line on the night thought. However, they still looked like an incredible team and the energy was up all night, but they ran into one…major…foe…

The Bruns Bros.

North Dakota Commit Paul Bruns finished with 22 points and 18 rebounds to lead Dakota Valley to the 66-55 victory, and for a guard, those rebound numbers are incredible! Paul’s brother Issac Bruns finished with 19 points and eight rebounds as well. Combined, that puts them at 41 points on the night, which is fairly close to what they averaged last year. With the talent Dakota Valley has, I think it would be tough for them to average much more, but Paul did go 1-8 from the 3-point line last night, so there was some points to be had there.

Ranked Teams Perform Well

Lots of other ranked teams performed well last night, and especially in Class B. Here’s a list of all the games ranked teams played last night.

Class AA

  • #2 Yankton 76, Spearfish 60
  • #3 Brandon Valley 76, Rapid City Stevens 48
  • #5 Harrisburg 45, Pierre 43

Class A

  • #1 Dakota Valley 66, #3 Tea Area 55
  • #2 Sioux Falls Christian 73, Lennox 51
  • #4 Dell Rapids 62, West Central 42

Class B

  • #1 DeSmet 63, Deubrook 24
  • #2 White River 74, Jones County 37
  • #4 Viborg-Hurley 72, Freeman 17

I thought it was funny that White River plays Jones County in the first game of the year, because I believe that they are together for a co-op in football. Little friendly rivalry I guess. I also think Viborg-Hurley’s win is quite impress, as given up less than 20 points in any game is special. Now, here’s who ranked teams play today on Dec.12

Class AA

  • #1 Sioux Falls Roosevelt vs O’Gorman
  • #2 Yankton @ Rapid City Stevens
  • #3 Brandon Valley @ Spearfish
  • #4 Sioux Falls Washington vs Brookings

Class A

  • #2 Sioux Falls Christian @ West Central
  • #5 Sioux Valley @Clark/Willow Lake

Class B

  • #3 Platte-Geddes @ Andes Central/Dakota Christian

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts for the day ahead…How about getting thrown into the fire for Spearfish, playing the #2 and #3 team in Class AA on back-to-back days…

I am also very interested in the Sioux Valley vs. Clark/Willow Lake. I have a suspicion that Clark/Willow Lake is better than most suspect but Sioux Valley will be a tough opponent…

Also how about Vermillion last night?! The Tanagers won a 77-25 victory over Bon Homme, and I think the Tanagers might be a dark horse favorite to reach the semifinals. Look out for them in the upcoming weeks…

Final thought, West Central also is getting thrown into the fire a bit, playing Dell Rapids and Sioux Falls Christian in back-to-back games. The Quarriers beat the Trojans by 20, and I know it’s early, but I think the media will keep an eye on this game to gauge those middle ranking spots in Class A.

As always, we do are best to include what we can, but we can’t include everybody. We enjoy the support you bring, and next week we will be adding analysis and recap on girls basketball as well!!
