This is our new series in which we provide you with a recap of South Dakota Sports from the day prior while you start your afternoon. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the stories.

Alright folks, it’s Winter Solstice and we have another great week of South Dakota basketball! I’m excited to talk about some games from last weekend, a new poll we put out on twitter, and lot’s more for this upcoming week. LETS DO THIS!

Boys: Dell Rapids vs Tea Area

This game was delayed because of a power outage, and yet, the outcome was still shocking! Lol, I’m not very good at puns, but this game was an excellent reminder of how good South Dakota basketball is to watch. Collin Rentz made the last second floater off of a beautiful give-and-go inbounds play. There is the old saying that “the most dangerous player on the court is the one who just passed the ball,” and I couldn’t think that is more true.

In all honesty, too, this was a huge game for the Quarriers. It solidified their spot as one of the top 2 teams in Class A…But a 67-65 loss shouldn’t hold the Titans back too much either. Could we see part 2 in the State Tournament? That would be fun!

Boys: Tiopsa Zina vs White River

I forgot to mention this game the other night, and I was disappointed in myself for not mentioning it. I had searched the twitter-verse and the SDHSAA website, but didn’t find the score before I wrote the last blog. However, it deserves a shoutout. Tiospa Zina scored with seven seconds left in overtime to get a 77-76 win against #2 White River.

That is a remarkable win for the Wambi, and I want to give them some credit. Thank you Jaylen Uthe for the heads up!

Even with the loss, I don’t think White River will drop too far. Then again, the top of Class B is loaded and like a great track race, if you trip up, you might fall far behind the pack. I don’t see White River having anymore slip ups, but the Tigers will need some more impressive wins to keep climbing. (Note: I haven’t seen the new rankings so sorry if I’m way off here.)

Girls: Lexi Unruh Dominates

When I saw the news about this one, I can say I did a double take. 41 points?! Are you kidding me?! Unruh was unstoppable in Sioux Falls Christians’ 59-39 win over Clark/Willow Lake. I mean, she outscored the entire opposing team!

The Creighton commit showed why she is one of the top players in the state, and from what I hear, expect Lexi to continue dominating defenses throughout South Dakota.

Poll of the Day: Class AA

Ok so I put out a new poll on Twitter to see who everyone thought the new #1 in Boys Class AA should be and here are the results:

  1. Brandon Valley (68.8%)
  2. Washington (18.8%)
  3. Other (12.5%)

While I still thought the Washington victory over Roosevelt was impressive, Brandon Valley ran away with the poll. I will say that I also think Brandon Valley should be #1, but I was still surprised by how obvious it seemed to everyone else. But hey, no hate on the Lynx, they deserve the spot.

The Week Ahead

Most games will not be played until after Christmas but we do have some big games over break and it starts with a great matchup today…De Smet takes on DRSM today in what should be the biggest game for both teams young seasons. I’m going to try and get Blogs out on Tuesday, Wednesday, and then quite possibly one over the weekend but I’ll let y’all know as I enjoy Christmas with my family.

Final Thoughts

Kinda cool deal with Jupiter and Saturn aligning tonight and it’s suppose to be very neat to see. They usually align once every 20 years, but tonight they will be the closest they have been in over 400 years. I’ll probably have to check it out.

Well anyway, have a great Monday and I hope you have a good evening and enjoy the stars.

As always, we do are best to include what we can, but we can’t include everybody. We enjoy the support you bring, and next week we will be adding more analysis and recap on SD Sports!
