Opening Day was yesterday and my Yankees lost, so I don’t feel like talking about. Instead, let’s talk about all the p;ayers who debuted yesterday, and their performances.
Kyle Isbel, Kansas City
The former UNLV star had never played above Class A before yesterday, but was an All-Star in the Cape Cod League. The 3rd-Round pick opened his career with an R.B.I single, and Isbel finished the day with 3 hits in 5 at-bats. Oh, and he also had another R.B.I. He is just the fourth Royal to have at least 3 hits in his debut, so I would say that is just about as good of a day as you could have. Welcome to the league.
Jonathan India, Cincinnati
If your a college baseball fan, then you had definitely heard of India. The 2B played for the 2017 National Champion Florida Gators, and this former shortstop was the #5 overall pick in 2018. India finished with two hits, including a double in the Opening Day loss.
Tucupita Marcano, San Diego
The middle infielder from Venezuela was one of the top hitters in the Arizona League a few seasons ago, and what better team to make your debut with. He pinched hit the 6th inning, drawing a walk and scored on an Eric Hosmer single.
Ha-seong Kim, San Diego
Kim, who had a great 7-year career in the KBO, pinched hit late in the game for San Diego. He’s also a middle infielder who is singed for 4-years and $28 million. He struck out in his lone at-bat.
Brett de Gues, Texas
A Juco guy from Cabrillo College, de Gues was a 33 round pick in 2018 for the Dodgers. He has quickly climbed to the Big Leagues after being in the Rule 5 draft, and will be in the bullpen to start for Texas. He pitched for 1 inning in the slugfest, and gave up 3 earned runs on 2 walks and 1 hit.
Taylor Trammell, Seattle
The former first round pick for Cincinnati, Trammell was the MVP of the Futures Game in 2018. This is already his third organization, but the Center Fielder has found a fit in Seattle. He went 0-3 with 2 walks and a strikeout, but did score a run and had an R.B.I.
Will Vest, Seattle
He was a Shortstop at Stephen F. Austin, but since has made the transition to the mound. Vest has already had Tommy John surgery, and was a Rule 5 Draft pickup. He struck out 1 in his single inning of work, but gave up a hit, a walk, and a run.
Ka’ai Tom, Oakland
Another Juco guy from Fort Scott CC, he went to the same high school as Tua Tagovailoa. After Juco, he went to Kentucky where he was drafted in the 5th round in 2015. He pinch ran last night for the DH, and went 0-1.
Chas McCormick, Houston
A small college guy from Millerville, a D-2, the outfielder was a 21st-round pick in 2017. He was on the ALDS roster last season, but did not play. He was a defensive substitute for Michael Brantley.
