This is our new series in which we provide you with a recap of South Dakota Sports from the day prior while you start your afternoon. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the stories.

It’s been almost a week since I was back on the writing and it’s time to get back into it. We have a ton of great basketball to catch up on as we ring in the New Year, so let’s start right now!

Girls: Addison Rozell

Okay, so Parker beat Redfield 61-56 the other night in girls basketball and there is one incredible stat line that we need to talk about. In fact, Addison Rozell may have very well had the most impressive stat line I’ve seen all year. Rozell finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds…AND 8 BLOCKS!

Are you kidding me?! That is absolutely unreal. I am a huge fan of non-traditional triple-doubles, and that is about as close as you can get with blocks. I think this is the early leader for most impressive game of the year, especially on the girls side. Although Lexi Unruh’s 41 points against Clark/Willow Lake is up there too. Idk might have to have a twitter poll, but let’s hope Rozell can do this again later down the line.

Girls: Brandon Valley Upsets O’Gorman

O’Gorman’s 23-game win streak comes to an end at the hand of the Lynx. Brandon Valley was actually down by 21 points in this game but came back to win 63-53 and I think it shows that this Brandon Valley teams has a lot of grit. It’s easy to say “Oh they are really good and are winning by a lot, let’s just pack it up and go home.” But no, the Lynx have mental toughness and it showed. That skill is what gets you deep into the playoffs and these girls have a good shot of doing some damage this season.

Also one more note: O’Gorman is still really, really good. It’s incredible how dominate they’ve been and I think it goes to show just how tough this Brandon Valley team really is!

Girls: Menno Buzzer Beater

We love buzzer beaters and there was one already this week! Menno defeated Platte-Geddes 48-45 as Jesse Munkvold made the game-winning 3 for the Wolves in the Parkston Classic. As I said before:

WE LOVE BUZZER BEATERS!

Boys: The Damon Wilkinson Story

Okay, if you haven’t seen it yet, go read/watch the story on Damon Wilkinson of De Smet by Dakota News Now. Really incredible story for the 6’7 sophomore that is not playing after recovering from a hunting accident. I’m not going to go into all the details on the blog here, so I encourage you to go read the story itself. I’m just glad that Wilkinson is okay, and that he gets to continue to play with this team.

Boys: I-90 Challenge

So at the time I am writing this, Yankton just beat Campbell County 77-64 to win the third game for Team South Dakota. I think I’ll go more into the details tomorrow, but I said that South Dakota should win three of four on the boys side. I was debating whether to say South Dakota would win all 4, but 3 of 4 seemed reasonable. The dominace so far might lead me to the main story of the blog tomorrow…Is Mitchell underrated?

I think I will focus on that tomorrow and go more into the I-90 Challenge when it’s all over. Stay tuned…

Final Thoughts

Congrats to Avery Broughton of Corsica-Stickney for breaking the school record in points. Now let’s see if Broughton and the Jaguars can bring home that Class B title!

Alright that’s all I have to say today. Hopefully, I will have time to post another blog tomorrow and for sure I’ll post on Friday. Until then, enjoy the holidays and support your community!

As always, we do our best to include what we can, but we can’t include everybody. We enjoy the support you bring, and next week we will continue to have more analysis and recap on SD Sports!
