This is our new series in which we provide you with a recap of South Dakota Sports from the day prior while you start your afternoon. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the stories.

Today is a very busy day for me and I want to keep this short an simple, but there was so much good basketball yesterday, that I don’t know if I can!

I was at the Yankton vs Brandon Valley game yesterday, and no, I did not talk to Dale Moss, I was too busy watching great basketball!! But ya, here are my thoughts on the game yesterday.

#2 Yankton vs #3 Brandon Valley Part 1: Lynx’ Can’t Miss

First off, I want to say that I think a huge reason the Lynx won was because of their end-of-the-game shooting. Jaksen Deckert (17 pts.) went off at the end of the game, and the senior point guard made some very tough shots. I was also impressed with how Jackson Hilton (25 pts.) handle himself last night. He was matched with Mors for a good portion of the night, and still played very well on the offensive end. Hilton did a great job of driving to the hoop and getting to his strong side to finish the basket. And the three from the corner at the end?! Well that was just pure ice-in-the-veins.

#2 Yankton vs #3 Brandon Valley Part 2: Selfless

Even in the 62-60 last night, I still saw some great things from the Bucks. But while I was driving back home and even this morning when I was thinking about what I was going to write, I couldn’t stop thinking about a play. It was near the end of the game and Matthew Mors had the ball in his hands at the left wing. He could have taken a tough shot with a defender in his face, and with his shooting ability it might have gone in, but it still would have been a tough shot. Instead, he passed it to an open teammate in the corner.

It was completely selfless. Yankton folks had told me the kid who took the shot from the corner was a great shooter, and you know, sometimes you miss. That’s basketball, and that’s life. But to see Mors give it up like that? That’s special. That’s having trust in your teammate. It was a really cool moment of selflessness that I think the Bucks try to embody every day.

Boys: Bruns Bros Might Be Unstoppable

Alright I keep telling myself that there are other topics besides the Bruns Bros, but maybe no one else is more dominate, so we have to talk about that. In Dakota Valley’s 89-49 win over Canton last night, the brothers combined for 61 points. Yikes!

Younger brother Isaac lead all scorers with 35 points while Paul finished with 28. I have said people need to remember Isaac’s name, as this kid has still got two more years after this one to tear up South Dakota basketball. And with North Dakota commit and brother Paul in hand? These fellas might just be unstoppable!

Girls: #5 West Central Knocks Off #1 Winner

Well Winner’s 49 game streak came to an end last night at the hands of West Central. I had heard Hartford is the place you do not want to be if your #1, and West Central showed they have the talent to play with anyone in Class A. The 53-43 win has got me thinking…Is the gap between Winner and the rest of the pack much smaller than we originally thought, or is West Central A LOT better than their ranking shows? I guess we will find out as the season goes on.

Boys: How Do You Rank Class AA

I was talking with some folks last night, and how do you rank the teams in Class AA. With #5 Washington’s victory over #1 Roosevelt, #3 Brandon Valley’s victory over #3 Yankton, and #5 Harrisburg’s victory over Watertown, who is a very good team, the media has a tough decision to make. Here is my rankings:

  1. Washington
  2. Brandon Valley
  3. Yankton
  4. Roosevelt
  5. Harrisburg

I had a tough time trying to decide between Washington and Brandon Valley at the #1 spot, but I think Washington edges out Brandon Valley by a little. I think these rankings will change a lot in the upcoming weeks, however.

Final Thoughts

In my final thoughts, I want to point out that Oliver Vincent scored 32 points in Sioux Valley’s 60-54 victory over Baltic. Nice job!

Also Dell Rapids and Tea Area was postponed to today due to a power outage. On the boy’s side, that’s a ranked matchup that will be great to watch. That’s all I got, happy Saturday!
