The Unwanted Sports Record

*This article is from October 6th, 2020*

In a day and age where entertainment is at the forefront of many minds, the sports industry reigns supreme. With that comes the good, bad, and ugly moments in every competition. If you are an avid football fan, chances are you’ve heard or seen Tony Romo’s botched extra point hold that kept America’s team from reaching NFL greatness. What about the Curse of the Bambino or Bill Buckner’s incident? If you are an an avid baseball fan, there is a “shield your eyes” moment for darn near every organization, new or old. Whatever your choice of sport, it comes with a fair share of bad moments.

The moment I am about to share in this excerpt is not bad, it’s just down right ugly. Without further ado, let us congratulate none other than the Minnesota Twins on their most recent infamous award, the worst postseason record across all of sports. You heard that right, not just across the MLB, but in all of sports entertainment. What have they done to earn such a gaudy accomplishment such as this?

To earn the worst playoff run in history, one would have to first overthrow the previous losing record owned by the Chicago Blackhawks (1975-1979). This hockey team had previously taken losses in sixteen straight games. On Wednesday, September 30th the Minnesota organization claimed the new crown with EIGHTEEN straight losses when they matter the most. (2004-present) A handful of them are largely due in part to the New York Yankees, but this year it was the Houston Astros.

Like any classic sob story, this team had their opportune chances. Loading the bases in both the first and fifth inning, they came up with nada. Eight men being left on base is as a good as a dagger to the heart. To cap it off, a back breaking error in the ninth was what proved to be the team’s ultimate downfall.

Being a Twins fan myself, I cannot clearly devise an adequate reason for this latest sweep. One can arguably say that the Twins were better on paper, with a better pitching staff and a mix of skilled veterans. With being the higher seed, it is nothing short of an embarrassment to be swept out of the playoffs once again. No matter the accomplishments going forward, the Twins will be infamously known for their atrocious seventeen year playoff history.
