Yesterday in SD Sports Blog: Dec. 15th Games Recap

This is our new series in which we provide you with a recap of South Dakota Sports from the day prior while you drink your morning coffee. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the stories. 🙂

It was the first Tuesday of Boys Basketball on the 15th and yesterday, De Smet showed an impressive victory over Clark/Willow Lake and DRSM opened the season with a win.

On the girls’ side, Corsica-Stickney continued their run off dominance win a win over Avon and there were at least two buzzer-beating victories! Does it sound like fun? It does to me…Let’s do this!!

Boys: De Smet defeats Clark/Willow Lake

Class #1 B De Smet defeated Clark/Willow Lake by a score of 57-33 on Tuesday. I said earlier that C/WL is going to be a team that surprises some people this season, and I think this victory shows that De Smet is really, really good.

Kalen Garry dropped 28 points in the victory and nearly outscored the entire Cyclone team, while Cody Cavanaugh added nine points. Don’t sleep on C/WL’s Kalab Marx, however. The Webster Area transfers dropped a double-double on the Bulldogs (10 pts., 10 reb. exactly), and averaged 14.6 ppg last season. This guy is showing he is a serious baller that is going to cause a few teams headaches.

Boys: DRSM Gets Opening Day Win

Dell Rapids St.Mary was the last ranked Class B team to get a game in, but that opening night victory was worth the wait. Hey, if I had just reached the 9B championship in football, I would want a little break too!

Briar Cliff commit Connor Libis finished with 14 points and teammate Sam Palmer lead all scorers with 16 in the 67-26 victory over Mitchell Christian. And we won’t forget about Max Herber, who also had 12 points in the victory. The Cardinals are going to be a very strong team in Class B, and Tuesday’s win is just the start of something great.

Boys: Bruns Bros Strike Again!

This might become a Bruns Bros fan account, but hey, it’s not too often that you get a duo that’s this dominate. In the victory 66-35 victory for Class A #1 Dakota Valley, Paul (29) and Isaac (17) combined for 46 points. Could they keep this pace going?

With what I saw in their first game, I think that this could be a very normal outcome for the brothers. Paul does a great job of getting to hoop and if the Panthers shoot consistent from outside? This might be the most dangerous duo in South Dakota.

Girls: Corsica-Stickeny over Avon

Well, it’s a tough two game stretch for Avon. They have played the top two teams in Class B, and the benefit of that is the learning experience. The benefit for us, is that we get to gauge where Corsica-Stickney should be in the rankings. And Tuesday’s 68-45 victory shows that the Jaguars should rain atop.

Avery Broughton finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Jaguars, and there is no doubt she is on the short-list for the top underclassmen in the state. Raven Barse also finished with 17 points and eight rebounds while Morgan DeLange had 12 points.

This goes to show that the Jaguars are deep and have multiple threats and any team trying to knock them all will have a very tough time.

Girls: Buzzer Beater Victories

We love buzzer beaters and we saw two on Twitter in Girls basketball!

Anna Decker made the three-pointer to lift Iroquois/Doland to a 48-47 victory over Wessington Springs, while Kami Wadsworth made a layup with 0.8 seconds remains to give Hamlin the 46-45 victory over Flandreau.

While that may not be an exact buzzer beater, we count it! Hamlin was down most of the game but outscored Flandreau 20-9 in the fourth quarter. Wadsworth finished with 12 points on the evening, and there is nothing better in basketball than making a game winner.

Nice job girls!!

Final Thoughts

A final thought from a game on Saturday. How about Drew Norberg’s buzzer beater?! I had heard rumblings that the kid had some talent and that shot was pure ice-in-the-veins! The Arrows as a whole were down 16 in the third quarter and two late free throws by Pierre should have sealed the victory. But that win shows the Arrows have a lot of heart and a lot of talent that I think is going unnoticed. It’s dangerous when a team doesn’t give up!!

Also St.Thomas More had a 19-point comeback against Douglas in Rapid City last night. How about that?!

That’s all I got, stick around on Thursday for a preview of that day’s games, and as always go support your local team! Have a great Wednesday.

As always, we do are best to include what we can, but we can’t include everybody. We enjoy the support you bring, and next week we will be adding more analysis and recap on SD Sports!
